From September 15, 2025: VNeID Required for Domestic Flights in Vietnam

Starting September 15, 2025, passengers flying on domestic routes in Vietnam will be required to use VNeID (Vietnam’s National Electronic Identification app) or their chip-based Citizen ID to pass through airport security. This change, based on government directive Chỉ thị số 24/CT-TTg, aims to improve both security and efficiency at airports.

In this article, we explain what VNeID is, what changes travelers can expect, the implementation timeline, and tips for preparing for your next domestic flight in Vietnam.

1. What Is VNeID?

VNeID is Vietnam’s official digital identification system that allows citizens and residents to authenticate their identity electronically. It integrates personal data, biometrics (such as fingerprints and facial recognition), and government-issued ID information into one secure digital account.

VNeID is already being used in multiple public services and transportation systems. With the new regulation, it will now become an essential part of air travel security checks in Vietnam.

2. What Changes for Domestic Air Travel?

From September 15, 2025, the process of passing through security at Vietnamese airports will shift toward digital verification.

Key changes include:

  • VNeID-based check-in and security: Passengers can use their VNeID account or chip-based Citizen ID card to pass through security.
  • Automated kiosks and e-gates: Airports will deploy self-service kiosks and automated gates that verify passengers’ digital ID and biometrics.
  • Simplified procedures: For passengers without checked luggage, the entire process may be completed digitally, reducing waiting times.
  • Exceptions: Passengers with checked baggage, those requiring special assistance, or those on special flights may still need manual verification.

3. Implementation Timeline and Coverage

DateImplementation Details
Sept 15, 2025Domestic passengers must use VNeID or a chip-based Citizen ID to pass through airport security.
Oct 2025Biometric verification connected to VNeID will be available at all Vietnamese airports.
Dec 1, 2025For passengers without checked baggage, the entire boarding process can be completed digitally via kiosks and VNeID.

The new system will apply at all airports nationwide, including major hubs like Hanoi (Noi Bai), Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat), and Da Nang.

4. How to Prepare as a Passenger

To ensure smooth travel under the new system, passengers should prepare in advance:

  • Register for VNeID: Those who haven’t registered should download the VNeID app and complete the setup with biometric data and ID verification.
  • Check your ID card: Only chip-based Citizen IDs are compatible with the automated systems. Older IDs may not work.
  • Keep your phone ready: If using the app, make sure your phone is charged and has internet access. Carry a power bank for backup.
  • Allow extra time: Expect longer lines initially as passengers get used to the new system. Arriving 2 hours early is recommended.
  • Know the exceptions: If you have checked luggage or special needs, you may still need traditional manual processing.

5. Conclusion

Vietnam’s adoption of VNeID for domestic flights marks a significant step toward digital transformation and smarter airports. Starting September 15, 2025, domestic passengers will need to present their VNeID account or chip-based Citizen ID at security checkpoints, with full nationwide rollout by October.

For travelers, this means faster and safer airport experiences—but also the need to prepare in advance. Make sure you have your VNeID registered, your phone charged, and your documents ready before heading to the airport.

With this change, flying domestically in Vietnam will become more efficient, secure, and aligned with global digital travel trends.
